Samhain

I woke up this morning after a sober evening gathering feeling hangover and sticky energy. I started reflecting on Halloween and noticed mixed feelings within myself.

People dress up unconsciously as demons, zombies, and all kinds of creatures, feeding low-frequency energies without realizing what that means on a deeper level. I’ve done it myself during my university years. Yet this night carries a very special energy, and if used consciously, it can become a potent, healing new beginning.

Halloween originates from the Celtic festival Samhain, which marked the end of the year and the beginning of a new one. It is the time when nature goes to sleep and the dark half of the year begins — a season of introspection and shadow, an invitation to sink into Yin energy to recharge and bring depth into life. During this period, the veil between the worlds of the living and the dead becomes thin, and it becomes possible to connect with spirits, ancestors, and the unseen world. Bonfires and candles were lit so the spirits could find their way home. The tradition of masks and costumes came from the idea that wandering souls would not recognize the living and therefore wouldn’t follow them.

With the spread of Christianity, the pagan Samhain was rebranded with a new meaning and renamed All Hallows’ Eve. The old rituals and traditions blended with Christian symbolism. In America, Halloween has become a festivity for both children and adults — costumes, candy, parties, and horror films have replaced the remembrance of ancestors. People open themselves energetically through alcohol and substances and, out of unawareness, play with demonic symbols, feeding low-frequency energies.

During Halloween, the energetic fields and portals are wide open. This means people may become more sensitive, perceiving both light and shadow more intensely. Being in crowded places can sometimes lead to energetic “hangovers,” attachments, or draining sensations if one’s spirit isn’t aligned with the body and focus is scattered. At the same time, this offers an opportunity to sense where in the body the frequency that attracts this energy resides — and to dissolve it.

I still enjoy wearing costumes and transforming myself, and I realized that this can also be done for healing purposes — through shadow work — to harness the energetic potential of this time.

To create a new beginning by consciously embodying one’s fears or long-suppressed aspects, not to run away from the darker or hidden sides of oneself, but to act them out — through humor, play, and lightness — in order to dissolve the charge they hold.
I’ve experienced this many times and found that such practice can lead to powerful release. During my TaoTantra teacher training, we embodied the Dark Feminine archetypes — the ones that resonated with us the least — to bring those hidden archetypes into light. Gentle women became dominatrixes, polite women turned into wild women, and tomboys embodied priestesses.

Time moves on, traditions change, and young people want to celebrate. Many people do not sense energy or belief in the unseen world.

Halloween celebrations in their current form probably aren’t going anywhere anytime soon…
But — how beautiful it would be if people used Halloween consciously, choosing costumes that actually bring them closer to their own wholeness. ❤️
